Bitcoin Halving Cycle Comparison: 12-Month Returns & Time-to-Peak
An original comparison of all four Bitcoin halving cycles (2012, 2016, 2020, 2024) on one consistent basis: the price exactly one year after each halving, and how many days each cycle took to reach its peak. Compiled by High Definition Learning Group from public price data — full sourcing and methodology below.

Headline findings
- Returns are shrinking with each cycle. Twelve months after each halving, Bitcoin was up roughly 8,858% (2012), 294% (2016), 540% (2020), and an approximate 30% for the 2024 cycle. Each cycle starts from a far larger price base, so the same dollar demand moves the percentage less.
- Time-to-peak has stabilized. The three most recent cycles (2016, 2020, 2024) all peaked 526-547 days after their halving — a three-week spread. The 2012 cycle peaked much faster, in 366 days, when the market was smaller and thinner.
- The 2024 cycle's return is the weakest of the four by a wide margin — consistent with a maturing, higher-market-cap asset, though see the methodology note on that figure below.
The comparison table
| Cycle | Halving date | Price at halving | +365 day price | 1-yr return | ATH | Days to ATH |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Nov 28, 2012 | $12.31 | $1,075 | +8,858% | $1,163 | 366 |
| 2 | Jul 9, 2016 | $650.63 | $2,560 | +294% | $19,783 | 526 |
| 3 | May 11, 2020 | $8,787 | $55,847 | +540% | $67,617 | 547 |
| 4 | Apr 20, 2024 | $64,100 | ~$83,103* | ~+30%* | $124,774 | 534 |
*Cycle 4's +365-day price uses the closest reliably reported print (Apr 3, 2025), 17 days short of the exact 365-day mark — no source publishes an exact Apr 20, 2025 close. Treat this row as approximate; see methodology.
Methodology
For each cycle we recorded: the price on the halving date, the price exactly 365 days later where a source reports it, the resulting percentage change, the cycle's all-time-high price and date, and the number of days from halving to that peak. Cycles 1-3's halving-day and 365-day prices and return percentages are as published by CoinGecko's own halving-cycle research. Cycle 4's 365-day figure and every cycle's days-to-peak figure are computed by High Definition Learning Group from the individually cited public data points in the dataset file — this specific four-cycle table, using one consistent method across all four (including the still-recent Cycle 4), is not published anywhere else as of the update date above.
